Calico Cupboard Cafe and Bakery – Anacortes

One of the best things of living in Washington state is that there is so much to explore….fantastic wineries in Walla Walla to driving thru the scenic North Cascades Highway on a summer day…and yes I have done both and it’s quite amazing!  I love heading to any of the islands in Washington’s pacific coastal waters and heard of a place that serves unique homemade food.  This special place is called Calico Cupboard Cafe and Bakery located in Anacortes.   Their food is homemade using locally produced fresh ingredients that emphasize every dish.  The eggs benedict dish you get to choose between buttery croissant, grilled rustic potato bread, or homemade jumbo biscuit!  Perhaps next time…As a major Benedict fan, I decided to try veer away from it and try the Stuffed Raspberry Cream Cheese French Toast.  It had two slices of their County Fair Egg Bread stuffed cream cheese and raspberry, dipped in a cinnamon and rich egg batter, cornflake crumbs and grilled.  It was served with raspberry sauce and whipped cream on top!  I have never had cornflake crumbs generously coating the french toast.  It had a tasty crunch on the outside and with a balanced mix cream cheese and raspberry filled inside.  The fresh raspberries topped it off the most and you can really tell by the taste of it.  Fresh is always best!

This breakfast dish is one my favorites now, but unfortunately it’s an hour and 1/2 drive.  Nevertheless, I’ll be sure to try and come out at least 2x a year whenever I happen to pass through Anacortes.  Next time I definitely want to try the Calico Benedicts with homemade jumbo biscuit split and grilled with poached eggs and hollandaise sauce.  The Banana Coconut Cakes sounds great too….griddlecakes filled with coconut and fresh banana topped with more bananas, homemade buttermilk syrup, fresh coconut and whipped cream!

Also, Calico Cupboard has an excellent selection of baked goods ranging from caramel nut cinnamon rolls to peanut butter pies.  I decided to get their popular homemade huge Cinnamon roll and Triple Berry muffin for the long ride back home. If you get the chance be sure to head south to the scenic Deception Pass Bridge. It connects Whidbey Island to Fidalgo Island and it truly captures the spectacular views of Puget Sound. Overall, I had a great experience at Calico Cupboard Cafe for their great Stuffed Raspberry Cream Cheese French toast with the tasty cornflake crust and their moist and extra creamy homemade Cinnamon roll….Enjoy everyone!

I finally get to post my all time FAVorite barbeque joint in Seattle – Jones Barbeque!  I would best describe Jones as a Kansas city style BBQ.  They slow roast the meat for hours and slather it with a very rich, very tangy tomato-based sauce that has a good spice to it and the meat is juicy.  My favorite meals are the rib tips, beef brisket with a side of baked beans and their sweet corn bread!  Yum!!  The rib tips are smoke flavored, tender, juicy, and tart and the brisket is amazing.  They come in mild, medium, and spicy.  Their homemade desserts are amazing – ranging from sweet potato pie to peach cobbler.  Jones Barbeque has two locations – Lander Street which is about 12 blocks south from Safeco Field and Ferdinand Street which is basically in Columbia City area.  I would prefer Columbia City if you want a more relaxed and cozy restaurant setting.  Parking is street side and a bonus is across the street there is a lot and it has 5 parking slots for Jones.  Lander Street has more of an industrial setting to it and ample seats.  Overall, I highly recommend Jones barbeque for anyone who loves Kansas city style barbeque.
