Flying Squirrel Pizza

I’ve been looking for a new and tasty NY style pizza place to try and heard of Flying Squirrel Pizza.  It opened in October 2008 and is located in the Seward Park area…just blocks away from Lake Washington.  Very spacious, clean, and most of all the pizza was amazing… I decided to order one of their classics #9 ($18.50) which has housemade chicken sausage, mozzarella, goat cheese, spinach, Mama’s Lil Peppers, and added a topping of Spicy Coppa because I love Coppa.  Coppa, or Capicolla is an Italian cold cut meat and is very similar to that of a prosciutto.  I’ve been hearing about the pizza having the freshest and high quality ingredients, the dough and sauce made fresh daily..and omg every single bite you can really tell.  A thin, charred crust… homemade sausage was extremely tasty, sauce was tangy, perfect amount of fresh mozzarella and goat cheese, and peppers and Coppa gave it a great spice.

It’s great that Flying Squirrel uses local ingredients especially salumi artisan cured meats such as Zoe’s.  They have a decent list of micro brews.  First time I tried the Manny’s Pale Ale from Manny’s Georgetown Brewery  – tasted great!  Next on my list that caught my eye is The cured ($17.50) which uses Zoe’s s spicy salami, mozzarella, sauce, and black olives.  The Eartha Kitt ($18.00) blended ricotta, garlic and spinach, marinated portobello mushrooms, and topped with mozzarella.  They are on the expensive side, but well worth it!  Anything for fresh and high quality ingredients… Also, if you get the chance, given a sunny day, hit a left on 49th Ave S. (going north onto Lake Washington Blvd.)  and it’s an awesome scenic drive that takes you thru Leshi then Madrona Park and maybe stopover the Washington Park Arboretum.

  1. sounds ecclectic, and the prices aren’t too bad. I hope their microbrew selection is good, that patio looks inviting for a summer evening pizza!

I love coppa too! Even better is ending the week with a top-notch pizza and cold beer. Sounds like a mighty-fine institution!
